I work for a Print Management company or Marketing Services Provider.
The Print Management sector was a great place to be in the late 1990's. Many companies outsourced their print buying, based on benefits like our ability to manage all of our customers' print, see the 'big picture', and identify plenty of opportunities to make savings.
Of course, some small-run but high-admin jobs, like business cards, weren't profitable, but we made lots of money on the big marketing jobs, so we didn't mind. Then it got a bit tougher - customers renewing their contracts demanded even more savings, and that got increasingly tough.
Then the recession happened. The high-profit marketing jobs declined, and we couldn't expect Printers to help by cutting their costs any further. So now I'm looking for new ways to both boost revenue, and cut down on the admin overheads on short-run jobs like business cards. I'm pretty sure that the answer is to set up a Web-to-print service with variable data print capabilities.
There seem to be plenty of solutions available, but many lock you in to a specific printer, and others are 'point' solutions that can't handle the whole range of jobs I need to manage for my customers.
